In the past the carpets were always hanged on the wall and used as thermal isolation and it was also  considered as sign of prosperity. Since the walls have been good isolated, the wall carpets lost their option as isolation from cold and they now are used as decoration. Despite all, the carpets have a positive effect on the heating kosts and give a confortable wormth, specially when we like to walk barefoot or with socks.
